Watertown Councilors Favor Unnaming Square Named for Columbus, Fate of Monument Unclear
WATERTOWN – In December of 2021, the Pigsgusset Initiative submitted a petition to the City Council with over 180 signatures asking the City of Watertown to start a process to rename the Columbus Delta in Watertown Square. In June of 2022, the council voted to refer the issue to the Committee on Public Works, who discussed the issue for the first time on April 18th, 2023.
Ultimately, the councilors voted to proceed to strip the name “Columbus” from the delta and refer to it as simply “The Delta.” However, a motion was also made for the committee to convene again to get insight from DPW officials and the City Manager about what to do with the marker that has designated the area as the Columbus Delta since 1940. The marker was dedicated by the Knights of Columbus on October 12th, 1940.
