Photography Exhibit “A Winter in Greece, 1970” Opens at Watertown Free Public Library

WATERTOWN, MA – Joseph Flack Weiler’s evocative photography exhibit, “A Winter in Greece, 1970,” will be on display at the Watertown Free Public Library from October 2 through October 30, 2024. The exhibit showcases a series of 21 Gelatin Silver Prints, capturing the essence of Greek culture and mythology through Weiler’s lens.

In November 1969, Weiler embarked on an adventurous journey across the Atlantic on a Yugoslavian freighter. Accompanying him were the works of Greek philosopher Nikos Kazantzakis and Edith Hamilton’s Mythology: Timeless Tales of Gods & Heroes, both of which inspired his exploration of Greece. “My goal was to feel the pulse of Greek culture,” Weiler stated, drawing insights from Kazantzakis and Hamilton’s guide to Greek mythology.

Weiler’s photographic journey began at the iconic Parthenon on the Acropolis, a site rich in legend where the goddess Athena triumphed in a contest against Poseidon. He found further inspiration in the ancient olive groves of Delphi, where he spent time with a local family gathering olives, a nod to the myth that Athena gifted the olive tree to humanity.

The exhibit features photographs taken during Weiler’s travels to various locations in Greece, including Xanthi, Iraklion, Krista, Sita, Ierapetra, the Samaria Gorge, and Chora Sfakion. Utilizing two 35mm Nikon F cameras and Kodak Tri-X film, Weiler meticulously captured the landscapes and cultural moments that define Greek life.

All prints for the exhibit were freshly printed on Ilford Multigrade Classic Paper, showcasing Weiler’s skill in photography. The project was made possible through a grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, highlighting the importance of art and culture in the community.

For those interested in experiencing this unique perspective on Greece, the Watertown Free Public Library invites the public to visit the exhibit throughout the month of October. A preview of the exhibition can be found online at ilfordphoto.com/a-winter-in-greece-1970.

This exhibit marks a significant milestone for Weiler, as he announced it would be his final exhibit after having showcased his work in around 20 exhibits at the library since the 1980s.
