Watertown Veterans Officer Highlights Events and Key Resources for Veterans Day
WATERTOWN, MA – In the lead-up to Veterans Day, the Watertown Free Public Library and Veterans Services office are working together to honor local veterans, offering resources and hosting events to deepen the community’s understanding of veterans’ contributions and unique experiences. Key highlights include a Veterans Day breakfast, a curated reading list on military life, and an informational session for community providers about veterans’ benefits.
Annual Veterans Day Breakfast
This year’s Veterans Day breakfast will take place on November 11 at 11 a.m. at the Shutt detachment located at 215 Mount Auburn Street. The breakfast, a well-loved tradition in Watertown, brings veterans, community leaders, and city officials together for a moment of recognition and camaraderie. In keeping with tradition, a moment of silence will be observed at 11:11 a.m. to honor those who have served. Veterans Services Officer (VSO) Patrick George emphasized the importance of gathering with city staff and local veterans to reflect on service and community connections.
Veterans Reading List at the Library
In a new initiative, the Watertown Free Public Library is offering a curated reading list focused on military life and the experiences of veterans and their families. The collection includes books suitable for a wide age range and covers various topics, including the transition back to civilian life and the impact of military service on families. The list aims to provide community members with deeper insight into the challenges and sacrifices associated with service. Notable selections include The Ugly American, a fictional exploration of diplomacy and military influence, and Thank You for Your Service, which delves into veterans’ reintegration into society.
Veterans Benefits Awareness Event
In addition to the reading list, the library will host an event on November 6 designed to increase awareness of veterans’ benefits among local social service providers. The event was inspired by a recent Health and Human Services study that highlighted the need for broader support networks for Watertown’s veterans. With roughly 1,200 veterans in the city, many remain unaware of the benefits they’re eligible for, according to George. The informational session will empower local providers—such as case managers, healthcare staff, and community advocates—to identify veterans in need and connect them to resources more effectively.
Veterans Services hopes this training will allow for smoother, more informed interactions with veterans and their families, bridging the gap between available benefits and those who need them most. George encourages community members to refer providers to the November 6 event, where they’ll learn how to recognize and guide veterans toward essential benefits like healthcare and financial assistance.
Expanding Outreach Efforts
The VSO has been actively reaching out to veterans and their families, distributing brochures, increasing social media activity, and leveraging local cable access. Despite these efforts, George notes that much work remains, as many veterans still lack knowledge of the benefits they’re entitled to. Community members are encouraged to spread the word, ensuring that veterans receive the recognition and support they deserve.
Veterans or family members seeking assistance can contact the VSO directly at (617) 972-6416. George is available for both in-office consultations and house calls as needed, committed to making Watertown a community where every veteran is honored and supported.
