Raiders Report | Basketball Wins, Russo Wins 500th Match, Boston Gold Kings Roll Holyoke
WATERTOWN – Watertown teams delivered strong performances across the court and the ice as the New Year got underway.
The Watertown boys varsity basketball team closed out 2025 with a 59–40 non-league win over Fenway, snapping a four-game skid to start the season. Michael Nshanian scored 20 points to lead the Raiders, with Michael Caterino adding 15 and Ben Teixeira finishing with 14.
On the girls side, Watertown continued its fast start in Middlesex League play, defeating Reading 43–32 to improve to 4–1. Freshman guard Natalia Keuchkarian scored a game-high 19 points as the Raiders jumped out early and held off a late Reading push.
The Raiders Report also highlights a major milestone in wrestling, as longtime Watertown High School coach Kevin Russo recorded his 500th career win with a victory over Lincoln-Sudbury. Russo, a Hall of Fame coach, has led the program since 1999 and guided multiple state qualifiers in recent seasons.
On the ice, the Boston Gold Kings opened 2026 with a dominant 7–2 win over the Holyoke Papermen at the John A. Ryan Arena. Dave Mackenzie scored twice and added an assist, while goaltender Mike Cowell stopped 34 of 36 shots. The Gold Kings improved to 5–3 on the season and remain in second place.
