Watertown Police Polar Plunge Raises $14,000 for Special Olympics at Arsenal Yards
WATERTOWN – Snow flurries and below-freezing temperatures greeted dozens of plungers Saturday as the Watertown Police Department hosted its second annual Polar Plunge at Arsenal Yards, raising more than $14,000 for Special Olympics Massachusetts.
Participants jumped into “Bear Force One,” a 33-foot mobile pool filled with 2,800 gallons of icy water, in support of inclusive sports training and leadership development programs for athletes across the state.
The Watertown event is one of more than 60 polar plunges taking place statewide this winter as Special Olympics Massachusetts works toward a $1.5 million fundraising goal. Organizers said the funds help provide year-round sports training and competition opportunities for more than 20,000 athletes.
Teams from the Watertown Police Department, Arsenal Yards and Watertown High School took part, along with individual community members who signed up to plunge on their own.
Despite the cold, organizers said the snowy backdrop added to the atmosphere, drawing a mix of participants and spectators for the annual fundraiser.
