Watertown Police Address ICE Questions at Human Rights Commission Meeting
WATERTOWN – Watertown Police met with the Watertown Human Rights Commission to answer questions and provide clarity about their role during Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity.
During the January 12, 2026 meeting, Police Captain Dan Unsworth outlined how the department responds when notified of ICE operations, emphasizing that local police do not enforce civil immigration detainers and are focused solely on public safety matters such as medical emergencies, traffic concerns, and de-escalation.
Commissioners raised questions related to community safety and civil rights following a recent incident in Minnesota. Police participated in an open discussion, responding to questions and explaining the legal limits of their authority.
