WATERTOWN – Kindergarten families at Hosmer Elementary School are receiving new take-home learning kits designed to help parents support reading and math skills at home.

The kits are part of a new initiative called Academic Parent Teacher Teams, which aims to strengthen the connection between what students learn in the classroom and how families can reinforce those skills outside of school.

Hosmer Principal Erin Moulton said the program provides parents with both information about their child’s progress and hands-on activities they can use to practice key skills together.

“Every parent has received some information about how their child is doing on some specific literacy and math standards,” Moulton said. “And then they’re getting activities that match how they can support the learning of those standards at home.”

Each kit includes reusable games and learning tools designed to make practicing early academic skills engaging for young students.

The Hosmer program is currently being piloted with kindergarten families. Moulton said she hopes the initiative will grow as parents see the value of the approach.

“This is our pilot kindergarten, and I’m hoping that all of these parents will fall so in love with this process that they will be asking for it again,” she said.

The learning kits were made possible through a grant from the Watertown Community Foundation, which helped pay for durable pouches and reusable materials included in each packet.

Moulton said the program is designed to make learning visible to families while giving them practical tools to help their children build academic skills at home.
