WATERTOWN – Hundreds of people gathered at Arsenal Yards on Monday night to celebrate Hanukkah with a public menorah lighting hosted by Chabad Watertown, an annual event that organizers said carried added significance this year amid global concerns about antisemitism.

The Festival of Lights celebration featured a fire show, a chocolate gelt drop with the Watertown Fire Department, family activities, and the lighting of a seven-foot ice menorah. The free event was open to the public and drew residents from Watertown and surrounding communities.

Before the menorah lighting, Rabbi Dovid Zaltzman of Chabad Watertown addressed the crowd and referenced recent antisemitic violence abroad, including the recent attack in Australia. He said the ceremony was an opportunity to remember victims of violence and reaffirm the core message of Hanukkah — light overcoming darkness.

“There is no darkness in the world that can snuff out our candle,” Zaltzman said, adding that even during difficult times, public gatherings like the celebration serve as a symbol of resilience and hope.

City Manager George Proakis also spoke at the event, thanking organizers and community members for attending despite cold temperatures.

Members of the Watertown Jewish Action Network, a recently formed organization focused on education and community engagement, were also present. The group said it was created in response to antisemitic incidents and aims to promote understanding and connection among residents.
