Lawmakers Visit Watertown Schools to Promote School Meal Funding Bill
WATERTOWN – Congresswoman Katherine Clark joined Congressman Jim McGovern in Watertown as part of the “End Hunger Now” Tour — highlighting how local schools are connecting classroom learning with real-world food production.
During the visit, lawmakers toured a student-run Freight Farm at Watertown High School, where students grow produce using hydroponic technology — food that is later served in school cafeterias. The tour continued at Hosmer Elementary School, where students demonstrated how universal school meals and in-classroom breakfast programs are increasing access to nutritious food.
The visit also spotlighted new federal legislation introduced by McGovern that would increase reimbursement rates for school breakfasts and lunches — aimed at improving food quality and expanding access nationwide.
Local leaders say Watertown’s approach is a model for how schools can address food insecurity while enhancing student learning.
