WATERTOWN – The Raiders boys varsity soccer team has used the summer to reset and rebuild its roster following significant graduation losses. Since the first week of August—and with captain-led sessions dating back to June at the Buckingham, Browne, and Nichols school fields on Grove Street—the program has emphasized daily work, fitness, and chemistry to prepare for a demanding Middlesex League schedule. The team returns only five players from last season, opening opportunities across the roster for newcomers to compete for roles.

Younger players, including incoming freshmen, have spent the summer adapting to the speed and physicality of varsity soccer, making gains in fitness and decision-making as the sessions progressed. Several athletes believe that beginning captain-led workouts in June provided a head start over league opponents that waited until July to organize, creating an additional month of conditioning and touches on the ball.

Internally, the program’s goals are straightforward: bring back the atmosphere at Victory Field with wins on showcase nights, secure a home playoff date, and push for a deep tournament run. After a summer devoted to fitness, chemistry, and accelerated development for first-year varsity candidates, the team enters tryouts with momentum and a plan to translate extra reps into results.
