Watertown Superintendent Highlights New Communication Platform, Middle School Principal Search, and Future Plans

WATERTOWN, MA – Watertown Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Dede Galdston recently sat down for an interview with Matt McCarthy at WCA-TV’s Studio B to discuss key developments within the district.

One major update is the launch of ParentSquare, a new communications platform designed to streamline messaging between schools and families. Dr. Galdston emphasized that the platform consolidates email, text, and social media alerts while offering automatic translation into over 130 languages.

The conversation also touched on the ongoing search for a new principal at Watertown Middle School. A 15-member screening committee, including teachers, administrators, parents, a school committee member, and a student, is in the process of interviewing candidates. Finalists are expected to be selected soon, with a goal of announcing the new principal before February 14.

Additionally, the district is making progress on plans for a new middle school building. The school building committee is currently interviewing architectural firms to conduct a feasibility study, which will explore possible designs and community-driven priorities for the project.(Update: Ai3 Architects was selected by the School Building Committee after this interview occured)

Dr. Galdston also highlighted updates on Watertown High School’s new building, which is approximately 60% complete and on track for a Spring 2026 opening.

Other topics included the Five Essentials Survey, which will be sent to families on February 4 to gather feedback on school culture and climate, and the district’s commitment to ensuring that all students, regardless of immigration status, have access to education in a safe and welcoming environment.

The interview wrapped up with a discussion about upcoming winter sports tournaments, musical performances, and community events. Dr. Galdston encouraged families to stay informed through the district’s social media pages and new website.
