Watertown Basketball Teams Ready for Action: Coaches and Players Eye Promising Seasons
WATERTOWN, MA — As the Watertown High School basketball season tips off on Friday, both the boys and girls teams are buzzing with anticipation and determination. With the season opener set for December 13th, the teams are deep in preparation, under the guidance of their respective coaches, Mike Tempesta and Steve Harrington.
Coach Tempesta, entering his second season, reflected on his initial year’s success, which saw his team progress to the round of 16 before facing a tough exit. Building on a solid defensive foundation, Tempesta has shifted focus towards enhancing offensive capabilities, an area he felt needed significant improvement. “Being shot ready, having the confidence to take those shots, and driving to the hoop has paid off,” said Tempesta, noting an increase in the team’s scoring average from the previous year.
Meanwhile, Coach Harrington, celebrating his 31st year with the boys varsity team, brings a wealth of experience and a knack for player development. With a roster featuring four returning seniors, Harrington emphasized the importance of leadership, which has been a cornerstone of the team’s ethos, particularly inspired by alumni like Jeffrey Herbin. The presence of 6’10” junior William Carty, a versatile player capable of inside and outside play, adds a unique dimension to the team’s strategy.
The girls’ team will host their opener at the middle school gymnasium on Friday night December 13th. The game will broadcast live by WCA-TV on the Education Channel at 7pm. Jim Vershbow will be on the call. The boys’ season also tips off Friday night on the road at Lexington.
