Mount Auburn Cemetery to Illuminate Winter Nights with Annual Solstice Event
WATERTOWN, MA – Mount Auburn Cemetery is set to host its annual Winter Solstice event from December 7 through December 21, inviting visitors to experience a unique blend of light, sound, and history. Presented by the Friends of Mount Auburn and created by Masary Studios, this immersive event offers projection-mapped artworks, interactive light displays, and the popular Lantern Walk, providing moments for reflection amid the beauty of this historic landscape.
Originating from a candle lighting ceremony that began over 30 years ago, the Solstice event has grown in scale and significance. Now in its third year as a light-focused celebration, it continues to evolve with new installations and pathways, deepening the connection between visitors and Mount Auburn’s storied grounds.
This year’s highlights include a large-scale interactive artwork with over a thousand points of light designed to inspire stillness and meditation. Another featured piece is “Eclipse,” a returning favorite reimagined in a new cemetery location. This 12-foot diameter installation mimics a solar eclipse with haze, light, and sound, creating an awe-inspiring sensory experience.
Visitors can explore the illuminated outdoor landscapes at their own pace and take part in indoor activities at Bigelow Chapel and Story Chapel. Bigelow Chapel serves as the heart of the event, hosting candle lighting in its sanctuary alongside live music performances. Other amenities include a message board, gift shop, food, and drinks.
The Solstice event is unlike any other, expecting to draw early 20,000 visitors over its two-week span. Open nightly from 5:30 PM with timed ticket entry, the event promises a memorable experience blending history, art, and community.
Tickets are available at mountauburnsolstice.com.
