Bruins’ Alex Steeves Tries Goalball with Perkins School for the Blind Students
WATERTOWN – Boston Bruins forward Alex Steeves visited the Perkins School for the Blind in Watertown as part of a Bruins Community Day — stepping onto the court to try goalball with the Perkins Towerhawks.
Goalball is a sport designed for athletes who are blind or have low vision. Players wear blackout goggles and rely on the sound of bells inside the ball to track its movement while defending their goal and trying to score.
Steeves joined the students for several games, learning the rules of the sport and experiencing firsthand the communication, teamwork, and skill required to play goalball. The visit gave the NHL player a new appreciation for the athletes and helped highlight Perkins’ adaptive sports program.
Watertown Cable News stopped by to capture the game and speak with Steeves and Perkins student-athlete Declan Cassidy about the experience.
