WATERTOWN – The German International School Boston marked a major milestone this fall with the opening of its new campus in Watertown, expanding space for its lower school and strengthening its long-term presence in the community.

Founded in 2001 by German expatriates seeking a bilingual education for their children, the independent, nonprofit school now serves nearly 300 students from preschool through grade 12. The new Watertown campus will house students from preschool through third grade, while older students continue their studies at the school’s upper campus.

School leaders emphasized that the expansion is about more than a new building. They highlighted the school’s mission of bilingual education and cultural exchange, noting that students graduate fluent in both English and German and are prepared for higher education in the United States and abroad. The school is one of only five German government-accredited international schools in the United States and has received Germany’s highest designation for academic excellence among international schools.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony also recognized individual contributions to the school’s success. Board member Lexie Gross received the German American Friendship Award from the Federal Republic of Germany, honoring her efforts to strengthen German-American relations. Interim Head of School Funda Suzan said the school is grateful for the warm welcome it has received in Watertown and looks forward to deepening its ties to the community.
